Earth Day 2024. Take action and be the difference.
Earth Day was founded in 1970 as a day to raise awareness about environmental issues impacting the future of our planet. Now, it has grown to become a global celebration! At the Washington Service Corps (WSC), environmental stewardship remains a core focus area. Its members have supported environmental projects while serving with organizations throughout the state since 1983.
This Earth Day, we encourage all who can to celebrate by taking action. Here are a handful of ideas that can help YOU make a difference every day!
Volunteer. The WSC works with partner sites throughout the state whose focus is on environmental stewardship, restoration and sustainability. We can connect you with them! Or, search for other organizations in your area that focus on the environment.
Use your voice. Encourage family and friends to take action. People can be spurred into action by the actions and opinions of those they care about.
Conserve. This concept applies to everything: food, water, energy. Buy energy saving electronics and appliances. Buy food that is sustainably sourced. Buy earth friendly products. Be mindful of what you use every day and find ways to reduce anything that might be wasteful or harmful.
Reduce, reuse and recycle. Cut down on what you throw away. Choose products with environmentally conscious packaging. Bring your own bags to stores. Donate unwanted items. Use bins to separate garbage from cardboard, plastics, glass and other recyclables.
Plant a tree. Plant lots of those oxygen producers and help reduce pollution in the air and water. Plus, wouldn’t it be fun to watch it grow into a beautiful symbol of your support for the future of the planet?
Drive less. Carpool, bike and find ways to combine and limit car trips.

Project description: We are involved in two separate events: Event 1- Restoration at Hilltop Park. There will be tools, materials and food available for all! Event 2- Get dirty for a good cause at Miller Creek. Read event details on the Green Burien Partnership website.

Host organization: Pierce Conservation District (PCD), April 20, 2024.
Location: Puyallup, Fircrest, Orting, Wash.
Project description: Community Green Space Improvement. Come join PCD’s Habitat Team as we celebrate Earth Day! We just completed adding thousands of trees and shrubs during the 2024 planting season. We need your help mulching them in preparation for the dry season ahead. Bring along your family and friends and prepare to have lots of fun improving critical salmon habitat! Host organization: Moran State Park, April 22, 2024.
Location: Olga, Wash. (Orcas Island)
Project description: Join us on Earth Day at Moran State Park to plant trees in our day use and north end campground areas. We will provide tools. We have limited gloves for loan but feel free to bring your own tools and gloves. We will offer light snacks and refreshments.
